Commemorative Brings Life To Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Original Vision For Gold Double Eagle Augustus Saint-Gaudens never got to see his famous $20 Gold Double Eagle reach the exalted heights it would eventually attain—the famed sculptor died on August 7, 1907 prior to the coin entering circulation later in the year. Perhaps the master sculptor would have been disappointed anyway because the design chosen for the coin was not his preferred design. Roosevelt And Saint-Gaudens Join Forces To Revolutionize American Coinage When President Theodore Roosevelt started his tour of the Greek and Roman coin exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in 1905, he had no idea that the simple visit would bring about a revolution in American numismatics. He expressed his admiration for the high relief of millennia-old coins, adding that the current crop of American coins paled in comparison. It was right then and there that he decided to begin a campaign to improve U.S. coinage. To bring this idea to life he quickly sought out Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the nation’s premier sculptor, to help bring about a revolution in American numismatics, one that would establish the United States as a leader around the world. The Gold Double Eagle That Almost Was Saint-Gaudens took full advantage of the opportunity to create iconic designs, some of which continue to be used today. One example is the $20 Gold Double Eagle, which shows Lady Liberty holding a torch and olive branch, backed by the rays of the Sun and the U.S. Capitol in the background. The coin was struck from 1907 to 1933 and has since been used on the American Gold Eagle bullion coins that have been struck since 1986. Recognized as a masterpiece, the design was not Saint-Gaudens’ first choice for the coin. Instead, The strong-willed Saint-Gaudens lobbied hard for an Indian Head design. Alas, both Roosevelt and U.S. Mint officials overruled him and selected the Walking Liberty design for the $20 coin, choosing to use his magnificent Indian Head Liberty for the smaller $10 gold coin. Only a single Indian Head Double Eagle Pattern was ever produced—the legendary Judd-1776 pattern—which today has an estimated value of more than $20 million! Modern Commemoratives Re-Sculpted From The Original Plasters After Saint-Gaudens’ death, the original plasters were housed at his estate in Cornish, New Hampshire, which was declared a National Historic Site by Congress in 1964, and the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in 2019. Struck In Unique Dual Super Incuse An incuse design is created when the devices of the specimen, which typically rise up off the fields of the coin, are instead struck down past the surface of the metal. Fittingly dubbed “Super Incuse” the effect becomes far more difficult to manufacture when done on both the obverse and reverse of the pieces as seen here.
